31: ripe

I've finished a full month of inktober, a drawing every day! Overall it felt rushed and I learnt more about what I need to learn, rather than techniques. I think this was because I found myself wound up between this, work, life drawing, beavers, and my own personal development. I'm very glad I finished, and even more so that I can get back to working on improving my construction and other techniques!

29: injured

I'm not doing so hot, I need to refine my mark making technique, as I'm getting really sloppy...

Monday 28 October 2019

28: ride

I'm finding my construction is definitely lacking even with simple shapes, but this is a skill that I'm going to continue pursuing avidly after Inktober through drawabox.

Saturday 26 October 2019

26: dark

I've had a long day and wanted to try something simple and fun; played a bit with sausage forms and making silhouette's clearer.

Wednesday 23 October 2019

23: ancient

I really liked this exercise and I'm definitely going to revisit the pharaoh-mummy vibe!

Tuesday 22 October 2019

22: ghost

This was painstakingly difficult to come up with a concept for; I think this was a result of lack of sleep, I've been frustrated all day and being creative has proven rather difficult.

Monday 21 October 2019

21: treasure

I need to be starting earlier on concept development to give me more time to pay attention to colour and overpainting.

Sunday 20 October 2019

20: tread

I struggled with proportions and construction, as this was the first time I've drawn a gnome. This is something I want to push myself to improve upon, rather than developing barbie head syndrome. She still looks rather flat; I need to practice and explore new body types, as well as my construction skills.

Saturday 19 October 2019

19: sling

I'm starting to get a lot more comfortable with silhouette. Spent some time inthe evening painting tiny mdf pumpkinds with my mum!

Friday 18 October 2019

18: misfit

Tried solely using the solid round brush, worked out a lot cleaner.

Thursday 17 October 2019

17: ornament

I took a bit of creative license here to lean towards ornate. I want to work at achieving a better result for rendering metal; something I will practice.

Wednesday 16 October 2019

16: wild

If I had more time I would play with designs a bit more as I feel like this tree is particularly lacking in subtlety. I feel like this would also benefit from some more time spent on overpainting, such as texture for the grains in the wood. I love the idea of wooden skull-like faces and want to explore this concept more in some future pieces (maybe totems!).

Tuesday 15 October 2019

15: legend

I feel like this one was a bit too plain of a design. and the overpaint is pretty crummy as my foundation was poor. I'd love to explore some more mermaid designs in mermay!

Saturday 12 October 2019

12: dragon

Today I experimented with unusual colour schemes and the gaussian blur tool to portray an industrial haze with a light pollution effect over a gargoyle-like dragon.

Friday 11 October 2019

11: snow

I spent today looking at appealing compositions and lighting of cabins in snowy woods. I learnt a lot, but ultimately went with something more simple!

Thursday 10 October 2019

10: pattern

I spent most of today looking at aztec and related patterns, which was a really interesting subject to research; I had a lot of fun! I learnt a lot about design of mandalas and using negative space to enhance appeal.

Wednesday 9 October 2019

9: swing

As I didn't have much time tonight I applied some simple cast shadow to render form. This didn't take nearly as long as full overpainting and was an interesting exercise.

Tuesday 8 October 2019

8: frail

I'm finding when I struggle with initial design my final paintings suffers, as I lack time to give it attention. I have also been spending more time thinking about design rather than construction, which results in my painting feeling flat and lifeless. I found this exercise a little more difficult than it should have been; I still need more practice with construction, proportions and planes of the face.

Saturday 5 October 2019

5: build-ing bonds

This exercise was a bit of a wake-up call on drawing hands in a more believable way.

Friday 4 October 2019

4: freeze

I spent the majority of today researching and conceptualising different renditions of an ice golem. I also spent a little while experimenting in Photoshop with painting techniques. I've learnt a great deal and had a lot of fun. It's nearly midnight, yet I wish I had more time to clean up and polish my painting.

Wednesday 2 October 2019

2: mindless

Sketch to digital; feels like it lost some of it's charm, but they always do...

Tuesday 1 October 2019

1: fairyring

I'm going to give inktober my best shot this year, drawing something every day!
